The cold weather conditions are particularly difficult for the elderly but one very good outcome is the number of people calling on their neighbours to make sure they have everything they need if they can’t get out. We have fantastic communities in Cornwall!
Now that these connections have been made or strengthened, it would be a good time to check that relatives, neighbours or friends are receiving all the help they are entitled to from government.
The Pension Credit guarantees a minimum income of £198.45 per couple and could be available even for those with savings or occupational pensions. Call 0800 99 1234 to check.
Cornwall Council can give advice on housing benefits 0300 1234 121
People may also be eligible for Carers Allowance if they look after a disabled relative or Attendance Allowance if they need help with personal care. Call the benefits helpline on 0800 88 22 00 for more information.
In addition, people over 70 and those in receipt of benefits or a pension can get help to pay for energy efficient measures to help keep them warm Call 0800 073 1311.
It is brilliant that so many people in this cold weather have helped elderly relatives and neighbours to cope and shows the best in our communities. Just one more step could also give huge help to those people for the future. .
